Youths from 15 to 18 years old will be very much a part of the “Olympics of ICT” (Information and Communication Technology) when they present and showcase their business ideas at next month’s World Congress on IT (WCIT) taking place from 18 to 22 May at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

These very young adults will be in the company of the giants of the IT world such as Dr. Vinton Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist at Google and Father of the Internet, Dato’ Dr. Craig Barrett, Chairman of Intel Corporation, and many other luminaries from the ICT world.

These youths have completed the Money Tree programme, which teaches and coaches children from 9 to 19 years old on financial, investment and entrepreneurship. The presentation of their business ideas is the culmination of their training in Money Tree.

Several of these ideas are ICT related and have real world solutions in mind. Such as the online event organizer or the search engine enhanced by social networking are ideas that seek to bring greater innovation and improvements to our life.

“Ideas and ICT have created positive impact to the Global economy. Ideas can come from anywhere including youths. For this reason, Money Tree is proud to show what the young are capable of during WCIT2008”, says Andrew Ong, Marketing Director of My Money Tree Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian licensee and subsidiary of Money Tree Asia Pacific Ltd (Hong Kong).

The Money Tree programme has trained more that 2,000 youths in the past 1 year. The key to this programme is it’s effective learning models, comprising of an Academy that delivers face-to-face coaching sessions, a portal that enable continuous learning via e-learning and its many activities, boot camps and workbooks, all combining to deliver an impactful learning experience.

It’s effective learning model through various interactive scenarios, whereby participants are given credit cards, cash, investment certifications and put through a ‘mini economy’ in which earning, spending, saving and investing are part of the syllabus in the programme.

Andrew adds, “Our mission in empowering youths to build a sound financial future does not stop here. In fact, we are in the midst of setting up a Young Entrepreneur Start-up Fund (or better known as the Y.E.S. Fund) that will complete the whole development process. MoneyTree on the Papers Again!

Programme helps children learn importance of money

IMAGINE 13-year-olds talking about the effects of inflation and how the misuse of credit cards can result in serious debts. Most kids at that age would rather talk about Playstations or the latest video games but not the participants of the Money Tree programme.

Over the past 11 months, My Money Tree Sdn Bhd has educated hundreds of schoolchildren and exposed them to financial issues such as the impact of inflation and more complex issues, for instance, futures and commodities.

According to My Money Tree Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Gerard Lim, the programme is created for children to learn in a practical way about money principals, how to become a better investor and most importantly to learn how money relates to their life and people around them.

“Along the way, the kids will also learn about positive values of networking, co-operation, being self-confident, competitiveness, value of reading and following current affairs and many others.

All smiles: Money Tree participants posing for a group photo after the completion of the camp.

“Money is not everything but everything has something to do with money,” said Lim, adding that most participants cultivate better reading habits on financial issues.

There are three levels of curriculum offered in the programme - Junior (9-13 years old), Apprentice (14-18 years old) and Entrepreneur (19 years old and above).

The key to the programme is its effective learning model, which uses various interactive scenarios and a simulated ‘mini economy’. The basics such as earning, spending, saving and investing are all part of the syllabus.

Boasting a complete hands-on simulation comprising proprietary currency, credit cards, banking system and stock market sessions, these lessons are highly interactive, in order to engage the kids’ interest in the topic.

Money Tree conducts face-to-face camps, normally done during the weekends or school holidays.

“Our curriculum is taught in a fun-filled environment,” said Lim.

Moreover, the financial education does not end merely with a scroll or a certificate. Graduates of Money Tree can actually start up their own business with funding from Money Tree Young Entrepreneur Start-up (Y.E.S) Fund.

“Y.E.S Fund will invest in viable business ideas from the graduates of Money Tree. This way, the graduates will move into real world application of what they have learned,” said Lim, adding that the fund will be launched soon.

He also said that Money Tree is in the midst of starting the Money Tree Academy, where programmes will be conducted once a week in a 90-minute class. The classes will take place at Money Tree Academy centres throughout the country.

My Money Tree Sdn Bhd is located at EL-11-13A, Amcorp Business Tower, No. 18 Persiaran Barat, 46150, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

20080402 Importance of Financial Literacy Among Youths

The Importance of Financial Literacy Among Youths

Competency in managing money appears to be a skill that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Unless a person is exposed to the practice of money management, they are less likely to understand how it works and its long-term benefits. It is easy to develop poor spending and financial habits resulting in significant negative consequences such as amassing huge credit card debts, bad credit ratings and bankruptcy, to name a few. Early financial literacy is the best way to prevent such consequences.

Recognizing this, My Money Tree Sdn Bhd started the Money Tree program, a financial and investment training program developed to educate and prepare youths for the financial journey that they will face during their adulthood.

Since its inception in 2007, The Money Tree programme has trained more that 2,000 youths (aged 10 to 18 yrs old). The key to this programme is it’s effective learning models, comprising of an Academy that delivers face-to-face coaching sessions, a portal that enable continuous learning via e-learning and its many activities, boot camps and workbooks, all combining to deliver an impactful learning experience.

In fact, the programme’s effectiveness is clearly visible when in the recently concluded Entrepreneur In Youth Challenge organized by AIESEC Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, two teams of secondary students aged between 12- 17 (trained by the Money Tree Programme) edged other teams comprising varsity students to be placed among the TOP 5 teams.

Mr. Andrew Ong, Marketing Director of My Money Tree Sdn Bhd says “Our mission in empowering youths to build a sound financial future does not stop here. In fact, we are in the midst of setting up a Young Entrepreneur Start-up Fund (or better known as Y.E.S. Fund) that will complete the whole development process. 20080326 Developing Youths Into Savvy Investors

Developing Youths into Savvy Entrepreneurs & Investors

Kuala Lumpur, 26 March 2008

Prepare yourselves to take a back seat, mums and dads - your children could soon be taking over the family finances, thanks to a new programme on financial education for children and teenagers.
Aptly call the MONEYTREE Programme, it is one of the first resources to be made available to the Malaysian public to allow parents to educate and prepare their children for the financial journey that they will face during their adulthood.
The key to the this programme is it’s effective learning model through various interactive scenarios, whereby participants are given credit cards, cash, investment certifications and put through a ‘mini economy’ in which earning, spending, saving and investing are part of the syllabus in the programme.
In fact, it is so successful that Mr. Jonathan Chong, the proud father of one 10 years old graduate of the camp said “It’s amazing. My son is now telling me how inflation is making us poorer by the day and how misuse of credit cards can result in serious debt.”
Apart from teaching children on financial savvyness, the programme also helps develop entrepreneurship in them. A good example is the recently concluded Business Game organized by AIESEC Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, where two teams of secondary students aged between 12- 17 edged other teams comprising varsity students to be placed among the TOP 5 teams.

Both teams were trained under the Money Tree program, a financial and investment training program developed by Money Tree Asia Pacific Limited.

Recognizing both the need of such programme and the quality of the MONEYTREE Programme, OPEN UNIVERSITY of MALAYSIA (OUM) will be signing a Memorandum with MONEYTREE to enable participants of the programme to qualify for some of its academic and career certifications, thus enabling MONEYTREE graduates to obtain a head start in building their career future.

Professor Selvaraja of OUM said: “Good quality financial education gives pupils many of the skills they need to succeed at school and in their careers. It also helps young people to handle money matters sensibly in their personal lives and avoid the problems of debt. I want our schools to deliver effective, imaginative and inspirational programmes of financial education which provide long term benefits for young people.”
So parents, look out for the next MONEYTREE learning centres near you as it may provide your child with the knowledge they need to chart their financial future.
