20080326 Developing Youths Into Savvy Investors

Developing Youths into Savvy Entrepreneurs & Investors

Kuala Lumpur, 26 March 2008

Prepare yourselves to take a back seat, mums and dads - your children could soon be taking over the family finances, thanks to a new programme on financial education for children and teenagers.
Aptly call the MONEYTREE Programme, it is one of the first resources to be made available to the Malaysian public to allow parents to educate and prepare their children for the financial journey that they will face during their adulthood.
The key to the this programme is it’s effective learning model through various interactive scenarios, whereby participants are given credit cards, cash, investment certifications and put through a ‘mini economy’ in which earning, spending, saving and investing are part of the syllabus in the programme.
In fact, it is so successful that Mr. Jonathan Chong, the proud father of one 10 years old graduate of the camp said “It’s amazing. My son is now telling me how inflation is making us poorer by the day and how misuse of credit cards can result in serious debt.”
Apart from teaching children on financial savvyness, the programme also helps develop entrepreneurship in them. A good example is the recently concluded Business Game organized by AIESEC Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, where two teams of secondary students aged between 12- 17 edged other teams comprising varsity students to be placed among the TOP 5 teams.

Both teams were trained under the Money Tree program, a financial and investment training program developed by Money Tree Asia Pacific Limited.

Recognizing both the need of such programme and the quality of the MONEYTREE Programme, OPEN UNIVERSITY of MALAYSIA (OUM) will be signing a Memorandum with MONEYTREE to enable participants of the programme to qualify for some of its academic and career certifications, thus enabling MONEYTREE graduates to obtain a head start in building their career future.

Professor Selvaraja of OUM said: “Good quality financial education gives pupils many of the skills they need to succeed at school and in their careers. It also helps young people to handle money matters sensibly in their personal lives and avoid the problems of debt. I want our schools to deliver effective, imaginative and inspirational programmes of financial education which provide long term benefits for young people.”
So parents, look out for the next MONEYTREE learning centres near you as it may provide your child with the knowledge they need to chart their financial future.

Our Programmes

The Entire Money Tree programme is divided into several products:
MoneyTree Academy (Weekly Modular Program)
Fast Track (Face to Face) Camps
Young Entrepreneurs’ Start Up programme (Y.E.S.)

Money Tree Academy

The Academy Model is based on a local licensee model. Similar to a tuition centre, the Academy offers weekly classes where students attend “classes” in groups (maximum 20 to a class). That is where the similarities end.

The Academy conducts sessions based on the Money Tree Content Syllabus that incorporates a Learning Through Play philosophy. Students run through a series of modules that require them to make a series of financial decisions, utilizing:

  • Currency – proprietary Money Tree Currency
  • Credit Card with Magnetic Strip encoded with details of the “Cardholder”
  • Bank Card with Magnetic Strip encoded with details of the “Cardholder”
  • A series of 2-3 minute video which focus on key points
  • Stock Market Simulation

Students can then carry on with the activities online, when they are at home. The Virtual City Portal is a domain in which its citizens (our students) engage in trade, forums, simulations and other exciting activities in which they will earn Money Tree Currency.
Each month, there will be an auction of items, and bids must be made in the form of Money Tree currency – giving the currency a true value.

Fast Track (Face To Face) Camps

Throughout our 2 day Boot Camp, we take kids through a series of key areas:

  1. Knowing the types of income and its source to help make wiser investment decisions
  2. Learning how to manage money and prioritizing expenditure
  3. Learning how to use the credit card only to create what we define as good debts
  4. Learning to use leverage to create wealth. Leverage using other people’s time, energy and money to make you money is also defined as the use of borrowed money to increase investing power
  5. Learning how to manage risk and not avoid it
  6. Differences between why and where to ’save’ money and why and where you ‘invest’ your money

Our Methodology

Teaching kids through a classroom format has its limitations. Kids, as with young adults, learn best through personal experience.

By providing an environment where play cash and credit cards are available and everything has to be paid for (including credit card interest), we simulate conditions which are closest to reality, giving them a first hand feel of the financial pitfalls that exist in our world.

We emphasise on the need to plan their financial future NOW, and that Discipline, Diligence and Determination will lead to a brighter financial future.

E- Learning Courses

Having an establish content developer as our parent company, provides with the key advantage of creating e-content that educates as well as excites.

The e-learning courses serves 3 functions:

  1. To provide participants of our Face to Face seminars with a follow up programme that will refresh and develop what they had learnt at our camps
  2. To provide kids of a younger age with a means of preparing themselves prior to promoting themselves into our more senior camps
  3. To serve as part of the main syllabus for our examination to qualify individuals into our Young Entrepreneurs Startup (Y.E.S) Programme

Our Online Portal - Virtual City

Our portal will enable our students and graduates alike to stay in touch with developments, events and new programmes that are either initiated or run by us. Among the features we will offer include:

Online Tutorials
Forum with Experts
Investment Tools
Investment Simulators
Online conferences & Seminars
Link to updated global News

Another supporting feature would be our SMS portal, which would provide the following:

1) Notifications of events
2) Lesson/Tip of the week
3) SMS back to “buy or sell shares” on our online stock market simulator

Young Entrepreneurs Startup Programme

One of the key objectives of this programme is to groom a generation of knowledgeable and skilled entrepreneurs by giving them hands-on experience of running a business. Participants who have undergone at least 1 Face to Face Seminar , completed the e-learning programme and passed our examination, will be invited to join our Y.E.S programme.

Here, they will be able to:
participate in our startup companies as a small investor
Participate in all decision making processes
Consult with our team of experts in different fields
Share in the profits

About MoneyTree

The current high credit card debt amongst young adults and the high percentage of retirees whom are unable to meet their daily expenses, has made Governments across the region more aware of the need to educate the young on matters pertaining to Financial Management and Retirement Planning These factors provide for an excellent environment in which to launch the Money Tree programme, as a ready market is available.

MoneyTree was established to provide the financial skill and knowledge to youths aged 9 – 22 , which would be required to build a career or business, as well as plan for their financial freedom. It has been created to fill the void left by the education system and school curriculum and to explore the opportunities available worldwide to further the dissemination and propagation of high-quality e-learning programmes utilising state of the art technology, and to groom the next generation of entrepreneurs.
